Diplomats are important people. Political leaders need diplomats to represent their needs and desires with other kingdoms. Guilds need representation in the local court, and in the distant ones. These are important matters that must be handled with care, and sometimes with great discretion. Some clients want it clear who is being represented, while others understand that remaining in the shadows is part of their strength in the negotiations.
Diplomats and negotiators work while straddling a threshold of what is openly known and what needs to be kept in the dark so they can work for the best interest of those they represent. Susurrus is a highly trained and respected negotiator who has worked for a number of concerns. He has worked for royalty of both light and dark courts. He has gained a level of respect from those who know him and is given active protection.
NOTE: Susurrus is a NPC I started many years ago for my DnD 2.0 campaign, when he was needed. I have used him in different adventures to hire parties for exploration, finding individuals, or paying restitution. He has been a recurring character as the campaign continued on through DnD 3.5 (we've kept this campaign in 3.5). Susurrus if getting ready to make a final appearance in a concluding adventure after the campaign sat while we played other games.
General Information
He calls himself Susurrus, and for those who have worked with him, that is who he is. Susurrus is a hired negotiator, or diplomat. When asked, he informs others he works for a client, who has hired him through private organization to complete a specific negotiation. He is good at what he does, and only gives information about his client he feels will help to complete the negotiation for his client. It doesn't mean he will work to take total advantage of those he is bartering with, because he understands a deal that is too lopsided makes for harder negotiations later.
Susurrus is educated. He speaks several languages and has magical items to ensure proper communication for other occasions. Along with his language skills, he is well trained in understanding people. He is very good at reading people and their reactions while being able to hide his own.
Susurrus is average in appearance in many ways. He works to maintain an appearance that is not offensive. His light brown hair is shoulder length and he is clean shaven. When he is working as a negotiator, Susurrus presents himself in nice clothes. He studies people and customs to help him be a part of the community he is working in without ridiculing their habits and traditions.
While working, he presents himself in the look of a wizard. He wears good clothes with a robe. In a sash he has several wands and if he has any form of weapon it is a dagger. Once in a while he will have a staff. Many of the items he carries are magical. At other times, a person may never know Susurrus was there. With the use of his magic, knowledge, and training, he is able to blend into most crowds and situations.
Background
Susurrus's background is clouded in multi-layered mysteries. It has been investigated by some and every time the story is different. Sometimes there are only slight differences, while other times it is vastly different than previous findings. The only common item that has ever come from any investigations of his past and present is he has no known family connections. Some of the different stories are presented here, but there are many more. Susurrus does his best to provide stories for the amusement of those looking into his past.
He is the apprentice of a powerful wizard who lives on a demi-plane. Susurrus has access to this plane of existence and has used it to be able to escape dangerous encounters.
He works for a larger organization of secretive individuals that have connections throughout the land. Another report has claimed he works on his own with a network of informants.
It has been reported that Susurrus was a street urchin in a major city and worked his way up through a thieves' guild. The guild was destroyed in a guild war. Susurrus was the only survivor.
Statistics
In a series of following articles, I will be presenting Susurrus's gaming statistics for different systems. If you have a particular system, and I know the system, I will attempt to convert this non-player character over for use. I will not guarantee every system requested will be completed. If you have a system you use and build out his statistics, you can also send me those and I will publish them.
